What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are the gold standard of restorative dentistry and are considered a permanent procedure that can last a lifetime. Implants are titanium posts surgically placed into the jaw to provide a sturdy foundation for restoration. After these posts naturally integrate into the jawbone, we’ll top it with a natural-looking dental crown, dental bridge, or even a set of dentures.
There are three main parts of an implant:
- The Implant: The titanium post serves as the new tooth root and is permanently placed into the jawbone.
- The Abutment: A connector that supports or holds a tooth or multiple teeth.
- The Restoration: This is the visible part, and is typically a dental crown.

The Dental Implant Process
Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation with our San Diego dentist, we’ll discuss your smile goals and evaluate your oral health before determining if dental implants are right for you. After you and your dentist agree dental implants are right for you, we’ll create your personalized treatment plan and schedule your implant procedure. The consultation is also a chance for you to ask any questions or concerns.
Implant Placement
Before starting your procedure, Dr. Bayette will apply a local anesthetic and your choice of dental sedation to ensure a comfortable and painless procedure. Your dentist will make a small incision into the gums before surgically placing your implant post into the jawbone and stitching the incision closed. Afterward, you’ll return home to begin the healing process. Your implants will naturally fuse with your jawbone through the process called osseointegration.
Completing the Restoration
After three to six months of healing, you’ll return to our office to complete your restoration. We’ll securely attach your choice of restoration to the implant fixture, ensuring excellent durability and comfort. You’ll leave our office with a brand-new smile to show off to the world.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, there are two types of dental implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are placed in the jawbone itself, while subperiosteal implants are placed under the gums but above the bone. For patients with less jawbone, we use subperiosteal implants.
Yes, smoking can negatively impact your dental implants. The failure rate for implants of those who smoke is four times higher than for those who don’t smoke. If you decide to undergo dental implant treatment, your dentist will advise you to quit smoking or chewing tobacco for good.
If enough jawbone is present, you can get the dental implant the same day. However, we recommend you wait for three to six months after extraction before undergoing an implant placement procedure. This allows time for the area to fully heal.
You’ll want to get your dental implant within the recommended time frame. This ensures you don’t experience bone loss following the healing process. This may require an additional procedure before getting a dental implant.
Dental implants don’t require any special oral care. As long as you do the following, your implants will be in excellent condition:
- Brush your teeth twice daily
- Floss daily
- Rinse your mouth in between meals
- Visit your dentist twice a year for regular exams and cleanings
